The Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program experience
| Thursday, August 18, 2011 |
Students who wish to earn a college degree while preparing to serve in the Air Force can enroll in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) program.
The AFROTC Scholarship Program, awarded in increments of two, three and four years, pays tuition, as well as lab fees and textbook costs, according to AFROTC.com. While the program’s current emphasis is engineering and other scientific majors, scholarships are also awarded to students pursuing other majors.
In addition to their regular academic course work, cadets also engage in learning experiences that will be vital to their post-graduation Air Force service.
For instance, visits to Air Force bases and exposure to missions are a regular part of an AFROTC student's college life, states AFROTC.com. These experiences help cadets develop the leadership skills they will need during their service, as well as in their professional careers. Following the completion of their studies, these individuals become contract cadets and can serve between 4 and 10 years of active-duty, depending on their role.
According to Af.mil, the official Web site of the U.S. Air Force, individuals who have an interest in the AFROTC must meet specified academic, military and physical fitness standards in order to take part in the scholarship program.
