Synchronous and asynchronous online learning options
| Tuesday, January 31, 2012 |
While searching for a college, you may find that some schools offer courses both on campus and online. If the idea of taking classes online appeals to you, there are a few things you should know about this course delivery option.
Online courses can be divided into two categories - synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous classes operate much the same way as a course that meets in a classroom at a scheduled time. Asynchronous classes, on the other hand, are less structured and allow students to work at their own pace.
While you may log into a synchronous class from the comfort of your own bed, you will actually be attending class while it is in progress. You, your professor and your classmates will all be online at the same time. Advances in technology have even made it so you can see one another on your computer screen. Other online tools you may use in these classes include video chat and web conferencing.
In an asynchronous class you will still be expected to complete tests and assignments, but the timeframe in which you get them done may be a little longer than in a traditional course. You may find yourself using e-mail and discussion boards, among other online tools, as you progress in these classes.
Before you sign up for an asynchronous course, think carefully about its format and if it is the right fit for you. Are you an organized student? Can you complete assignments in a timely manner without set deadlines? Will you end up leaving all your work until the last minute?
If you want to take the plunge into online learning, you may want to consider starting with a synchronous class, as it will allow you to experiment with a different type of learning, but still keep you on a regular schedule. If you performed well and enjoyed the experience, you may want to sign up for an asynchronous course next semester.
