Individualized college majors
| Thursday, February 09, 2012 |
During your college search, you may have a hard time finding a school that offers a major suitable to your personal and professional goals. If this is the case, why not apply to a school that will let you create your own college major?
In recent years, more schools are allowing the students to design individualized college majors. College Board, an educational research organization, reveals that more than 900 four-year colleges and universities let their students design their own academic program. Wall Street Journal columnist Sue Shellenbarger further explains that while all these schools require students get the approval of an academic advisor, at least 70 of them provide faculty advisors and special courses for individualized major students.
If you have very specific career goals, you may feel that a standard college major will not prepare you for the intricacies or the multifaceted nature of your chosen profession. Or, you may feel more comfortable customizing an undergraduate degree that will make you better equipped for the current economy and job market.
Paula Ebben of WBZ-TV quotes Debra Humphries of The Association for American Colleges and Universities who said that she feels the college major and its title are less important than the abilities and skills an individual possesses.
Ultimately, college is a significant investment of your time and money. Rather than devoting four or more years to a major you are not passionate about, consider creating your own.
