College Life Fair to highlight all aspects of the college experience

Students who are the first in their family to continue their education beyond high school may not know what to expect from the world of higher education. The upcoming College Life Fair will provide these students with an opportunity to see the types of personal and academic experiences that await them.
There are currently a number of college fairs of varying sizes held across the country to help students search for colleges. However, as far as these events go, the College Life Fair is expected to be rather unique.
The New York Times, in conjunction with the Illinois Association for College Admissions Counseling (IACAC) and Chicago Public Schools, will launch its inaugural College Life Fair on May 31, 2012. The event will be held in Chicago at Navy Pier from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
"For many high school students and their families, the path to college admission can be a bewildering experience, rife with anxiety, misinformation and missteps," said Felice Nudelman, executive director of education for The New York Times Company, in a recent press release.
The College Life Fair is intended to help these college-bound students by exposing them to the important aspects of college life and facilitating their college search.
Those in attendance at this interactive event will have access to representatives from different colleges and universities who will provide helpful information regarding various aspects of the college experience, including applying to, paying for, and ultimately attending college. In addition, exhibits and presentations will go beyond these areas and focus on topics related to campus life, including academic expectations, health and wellness, career counseling and athletics.
An added feature will be the Spotlight Stage – a forum that will focus on different aspects of the college experience presented by a variety of speakers. Jacques Steinberg, senior editor at The New York Times and creator of the news outlet’s college admissions blog, The Choice, will moderate these informative sessions.
"It is our hope that the format of the program will help high school students to have a better understanding of what it is like to go to college," said Laura Docherty, president of the IACAC.
