Bring your parents to a college fair
| Monday, August 15, 2011 |
When attending college fairs, you may want to consider asking your parents if they will accompany you.
College fairs come in all shapes and sizes. In fact, CollegeBoard.com states that these events may feature as few as 10 college exhibitors in a high school gymnasium while large-scale events can pack hundreds of school representatives into a conference center.
At the larger college fairs, you are less likely to be able to take advantage of all the opportunities that are available for you, due to time constraints and the volume of fellow attendees. As a result, having your parents accompany you might allow you to cover more ground. For instance, while you are meeting with college representatives, your parents can be elsewhere, picking up brochures and asking questions that might not have even crossed your mind.
If you are attending a fair sponsored by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), you may be able to register for a timesaving personal identification barcode. Rather than filling out postcards at each college table, the barcode allows the reps to scan your information, giving you more time to ask important questions.
The NACAC Web site suggests that your parents register for the barcode also. That way you can split up at the fair and cover double the ground and get twice the amount of information.
